"Purdue University" After Boot Camp, Frank was selected for the AST Program, which was intended to develop GI's with bachelor degrees. He was sent to Purdue U. from July of 1943 until March of 1944. At that time, it was determined that the need for soldiers outweighed the need for advanced training and the AST program members were reassigned. Eileen was one of the "3 sisters" that are mentioned fairly frequently in the letters in Frank's Files. You can see other pictures of her in sets 38 and 40. These pictures were found in a metal 35mm
film canister. The label on the top reads:FranksThe filmstrip was continuous, so the pictures are either in their original sequence or backwards: it's hard to know which was first since there are no numbers on the filmstrip itself. It is also hard to tell where they were taken ... most of them appear to be taken in the same camp, but I don't know if that was in Germany or Manila. This set was taken on Sunday, June 5 1943.
Dot had traveled from Ft Oglethorpe the previous Friday to
see Frank, but they really didn't get to spend much time
together until Saturday night. According to the letter Frank wrote
to Gen, they spent Sunday walking around Spartanburg
SC (the town nearest Camp Croft) and took some snapshots.
These seem to be the result, along with one additional
photo: IMG-024-001. Two friends of Frank's accompanied them. One was Bob Roche, who died at Anzio in 1944. I have not been able to identify the other soldier yet. Appearing: Bob Roche, Freidman, Dot, Frank |
