 Looks like "the crowd" that is occasionally referred to in letters, or at least some of them.

On the left is John Acer; John gave an interview in 2002 about his war experiences. Photo #003 below identified one person as "Johnny", which is how he was known at the time. By comparing that photo against one included with the interview, I was able to determine that it was indeed John Acer. Follow the link to read his interview.
