Personal History:
During the war, Frank dated Peggy Doyle; they were unofficially engaged. However, sometime after the war's end, they broke up.

After graduation from CCNY in 1948, Frank joined General Electric in Lynn, MA in early 1949.

While working in Lynn, he met Leona D. Martel in 1952. Leona and Frank married on 10/17/1953; their children are:
  • Joseph Leo Shields, born 08/27/1954
  • Francis John Shields, (aka "Jay") born 11/25/1955
  • Leo Francis Shields, born 04/22/1958
  • Mary Margaret Shields, born 07/14/1960
  • Dorothy Ann Shields, born 12/22/1961

In 1956, Leona and Frank moved to Schenectady NY (GE Headquarters); first living at a rental in Schenectady, then having a house built at 11 Bellaire Dr in Scotia.

Leona was diagnosed with lung cancer in early 1969, and died of the disease on 04/23/1969.

In 1971, Frank met Anna T. LeLievre (née Kleczek); they married on 06/26/1971. Anna's children from her first marriage are:

  • James LeLievre
  • Mary LeLievre
  • William LeLievre
  • Joseph LeLievre
  • Jean LeLievre
  • Anne LeLievre

Anna and Frank moved to 23 Ashley Drive in Clifton Park in 1971; their respective homes were too small to contain the entire family.

Frank retired from GE in 1987, and devoted his time to working on a book as co-author with two other co-workers from GE. The book, Industrial Power Systems Grounding Design Handbook, was published in 2007.

In 2011, Frank was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. He died on February 15, 2014.

Notable Documents:
  • 1 - 3/9/1943 letter to Gen. Frank's first day in the Army.
  • 655 - 4/10/44 letter to Dot. Starts off by talking about the fun he's having with weapons training, then goes on to discuss future training in radio and the importance of the Signal Corps. Then he talks about how he has asked Peg to wait for him until the war is over. Not engaged, exactly, but sort-of.
  • 400 - 5/24/44 Letter to Dot. Majority of the letter is spent on family analysis: himself, Joe, Chief and Dot.
  • 781 - 9/26/44 Letter to Gen. Frank's first letter (not V-mail) to Gen after arriving in Europe.
