8/3/80 Dear Frank Right to the point. Problem 1972 Toyota Last Diagnosis on Friday by mechanic: Lady forget it. the car has been to the shop at least 12 times since I arrived back in Maine in March. Up to this point I have replaced, ignition wires, fuel pump, oil filter, automatic choke, plugs & points, etc. etc. Now the break lineings are gone and have caused a tearing down of parts surrounding them. Mechanic gave me a figure of $125 to put used brake lineings in - he said I couldn't touch the cost of new ones, plus no "gaurentee", as they are used. I spoke with Dot, she suggested I call Roy, so I explained the latest happenings to Roy, he has been aware of all former work done. He doesn't advise me to invest any more money into the wreck, So Dot & I discussed option they come out as: No possible rider available to me, such as car pool, to get to Biddeford every day. I will have to renew my drivers liscense by Aug 31st which means getting Maine plates & insuranse plus excise tax. $26 for liscense & test & I don't have figures for the plates etc. So any at rate, Roy suggest looking around for an "American" used car. Establishing credit here has not been possible for me, since I'm not working. I do get $115 a week for going to school. Opened a savings account in June, but have had to take all but $5.00 of it out to pay for car. What I'm leading up to, is there any possibility that you could help me financially, wither and/or money to place as down payment and if I need a co-signee for loan. I imagine the bank would want me to have some collateral, right now I'm using Jeanne & Franks station wagon. She hopes to go back to work in October, so it isn't a permanent loan. Roy would shop for me, he has the book that give figures & depreciation value. The toyota has some value as a trad-in. At the moment I have no specific range (price wise) in mind. Continued Aug 9th Well Frank, I took Roy's advice & went to the bank, where I have my savings acc't ($5.00). The loan officer told me they require 2 years on the job, 2 years residency, 2 local references, & a local co-signer. So my vision of securing a bank loan went down the drain, also my attempt to establish credit. So right to the point Roy suggests a car for about $1300.00 with a $300 trade in for the toyota, I would need a loan of $1000.00. He suggests I can pay $50 a month back to whomever I get the loan from & after I am placed working in Sept. I could up that figure because I do expect to take home, more than $115.00 a week, as I do now. Really had no plans for getting into debt, but a car is part of my survival kit, and at this time an absolute necessity. And certainly did not want to ask you or put you in an uncomfortable position. So Frank, this is the way it goes down! please feel free to say no, I am aware that you also have many committments. Hoping to hear from you and honestly grateful for all you have done for me over the years. Say hit to everyone Love yah, Betty |
