07/23/1973 Letter Shields, Frank
Nixon, Richard

July 23, 1973

Dear President Nixon,

I have been a Republican voter all of my adult life - through some 7 Presidential elections. I am absolutely appalled at the posture you have take on the Watergate affair. Surely the American public - the "silent majority" - as well as loyal Republicans, deserve a full and clear explanation of these events. Your refusal to make the tapes and other pertinent documentation available to the Ervin Committee, as well as your hiding behind the principle of separation and preservation of executive powers, are a parody on your campaign promises to make law and order the hallmark of your administration. Like Caesar's wife, you should be above reproach, but your conduct belies your claims of innocence. I can no longer extend you any belief in your credibility.

Sincerely, F.J. Shields
