Shields, Frank

Wednesday Aug 9, 1944

My dear Frank,

Hi, m'love! - How's the old "Army routine" suit you after your days of "leisure."

Today was my first day back in harness and believe you me I sure did wish I'd had at least another week to recuperate after the hectic one I just put in. - It was swell, though.

I had hoped to get this letter off to you sometime Monday but its' taken me 'til now to get it done. - I tried to do it Monday but there were too many distractions - namely the contented and melodious snores of your brother, hard at work ... sawing wood. Then too, there wasn't very much to tell you - There isn't much now but here goes.

Well, I met Joe, or rather I discovered him, at the Soda Fountain in Grand Central, as he tipped a cup of strong coffee to his lip - I wonder why? - I found out later, how come. - We got to Rye just in time to miss supper but we managed to get a meal anyhow. -

Both Sunday night & Monday night we knocked ourselves out on the Rides down at Playland. Monday morning we greeted the dawn at 9:15 A.M. - that is I did. I have no idea how long he was roaming around but he claims he had a good sleep. - Oh yes - Sunday night, after we left Joan Brown home (she'd been to the Park with us) we went down to the Rye Tavern and Joe had some beer and I had Tom Collins - We stayed 'til after 1:00 talking about this n' that. So I was just a wee bit sleepy at 9:15 the next morning - Anyhoo we went down to Rye Lake to get a canoe out but we were just 4 hrs too early so we roamed around the boat house looking at the crabs that infest the water near the bridge down there. Finally we decided to have a swim down at the Pool. The sun was in and out behind the clouds but I managed to get a burn on the bridge of my nose and the tops of my legs. - And Joe lost a couple of his medals. We had a good swim though.

Tuesday we took our trusty irons (Golf) in hand and the three of us - Joe, Hon and I walked 12 holes of Golf - Of course old eagle eye Joe won. My legs (the backs, this time) still ache from the hills.

Joe got the 8:20 for home, Tuesday night.

And here I am, Wednesday night.

I hope Joe enjoyed himself; I know I did. - He ate as much as I did so you know he ate plenty - and he took a cat nap in the afternoon so I guess he had enough rest.

He claims he's going to be a steady customer up there when this war is finished so I guess he likes the place as well as you do.

I got a card from Fel and Eileen today. They're having a swell time. Went to the races and won $10! Also went night clubbing in Canada with a couple of Army Captains, no less! I don't care I like Pfc's better_ Captains bars scratch your cheek.

Johnnie Acer is home on leave! He was over to England and Ireland and down Bermuda way again. He looks very well, put on weight too.

Well, Frank dear, I think that's all I've got to tell you now except - I miss you & Hurry home. Good night xx

Love always,

Peggy
