July 13, 1944

My dearest,

When I promised that you'd have your letter from me this week, I never suspected that it would take me til now to get it written. I've worked every night this week till eight or eight-thirty and by the time I got home, I was so weary from the work and the heat that I could do no more than eat, take a shower and go to bed.

I hope, for your sake, that the temperature has been behaveing better down your way or that you've been able to catch an occasional sea-breeze to cool your fevered brow.

Well, what did you think of Rye? II hope you enjoyed the week-end as much as I did. I also hope you didn't mind being scrutinized by practically the whole (Brooklyn) population. Needless to say you were duly appraised and whole heartedly approved of, even by the youngsters. - But then, how could their opinion be otherwise - after all, you're the male in my mail, Jackson. Any-one who disagrees with my pickins just don't know from nuthin' or else they're jealous - That's all I've got to say -

Hey! don't go gettin' all puffed up now and get to thinking you must be pretty good - You can't take my work work (in a rut) word  for it. I'm an authority, I'm lenient and besides which I'm prejudiced (tsk, tsk, right out in public too!)

When I left Monday morning, Jim was feeling quite a bit better. I guess he'll just have to take it easy for a while. He has been doing too much lately.

Donald is in France now. I got a letter from him yesterday. He sends his congrats & best regards but he says he doesn't know whether I'm engaged or married! I think he's just pulling my leg though, I'm sure Evelyn gave him the story quite a while ago. I wouldn't put it past him to forget it though.

I just called your house to see if there was any news about Joe Oussani but your mother wasn't home and your father said that he hadn't heard any more. There was a letter from Joe today and so far he, himself does not know when or if he is to be shipped out of Fla., where he is.

I had lunch with Fel today. Every thing is pretty OK with her. I forgot to ask how that car[?] is coming along. - She and Eileen went down to Riis Park Sunday and soaked in some vitamins. Did I tell you that they've definitely decided to go to Detroit for their vacations? I hope they don't get stuck out there without train reservations. The Railroads won't make any reservations for that time, they'll have to trust to luck that they'll get home.

Rick is definitely coming in to New York the week end of the 22nd of July. Maybe you'll be in too and we could all get together, huh? That would be nice, wouldn't it?

- As you probably noticed Sunday, I have my "off" moods too. I hope that one didn't weigh too heavily upon you. I tried to do something about it but. - - . What had me that way was not so much any one thing as a combination of upsetting and disturbing incidents.  - Any-how it gave you a chance to get some evidently needed rest without me chirping and annoying you.

Guess what! Ann bought a watermelon this week, expecting that you would be on hand to help eat it- . Well, you can have the rind some other time. - if you're a good boy. - If you're not, I'll get the whip out, - so be careful. -

Tempus has figited, dear, and I've got to wash my hair before I go to bed so If you don't mind I think I'll close now - Even though you're more of a worry wart than I, I guess I'll keep on lovin' you anyhow. - at least till next week. - Good night, dearest. XX

All my love, Peg
