Doyle, Peggy

Shields, Frank

Tuesday June 27, 1944

My dearest Frank,

I suppose you're taking life easy right now, since the Signal Corps has finished the first step in the development of a model signal-man.  - Some racket! - (But I still hate the Army - I'm a Japanazi, you know)

Today was what might be considered a mild (?) taste of the sizzling summer to come. It was a dripping, hot day and definitely not made for work. Ah, for a nice crispy-krunchy snow storm! I almost wish I were an iceberg - with nothing to do but dunk myself in the icy North Atlantic waters. (P.S. - I said "almost") - Being what I am has some noteworthy advantages over such a frigid existence. - Hasn't it? -

There isn't any news around here, so I can't write very much in the way of interesting chatter, so my only alternative is to ramble aimlessly, hoping that you will be able to glean something from the results.

By the way, Mother sends her best regards to you. She told me to convey them Sunday, but I forgot.

I met Eileen in the hall today. She had a letter from Rick recently. He's home in good old Missouri on a furlough at present but hopes to get to New York soon. She told me that since I failed to carry out her previous orders, I should give you a verbal kick in the pants. - So consider yourself kicked, my friend.

I'm looking forward to this week-end very eagerly (in spite of the above) - I hope you'll be able to get an early train in so that we'll be able to do something - (besides pillow-fight and crosswords). I really missed seeing you last Saturday nite and if it weren't for the fact that it'd be like cutting my nose off to spite my face, I wouldn't have come home Sunday afternoon at all. But I couldn't be that cruel to me (the Army hasn't even let me have time to get mad -- Grrr-)

As I re-read the above pragraphs, it strikes me that they're kind of acid in their tone but I can't help it. Some times I get like that and can't resist the temptation to say (or write) things (I usually bite my tongue afterwards, though). Maybe that's no. 1 of the faults that I was telling you I had. Let me know if you've discovered any others and I'll add them to the list.

Well, dear, I'm sorry this has to be such a short letter but I don't seem to be able to write - I guess I must be out of practice.

Til we meet again I'll close - with all my love enclosed - no matter what happens, I  think that will be one thing that will always remain. I'm as certain as can be that there is no one else for me, now.

Love & kisses +++ Goodnight Peg.

P.S. Call me when you get to New York Saturday.

P.P.S. I ran out of blue paper but decided to use the blue envelope so you wouldn't be disappointed.
