Joe's

Mon. Jul 27, 1942 arrived at Flushing Meadown Park 5:50PM. Joe going to NY City Bldg at 6:30 to take medical & physical examination for Patrolman. Rejected; 1/4 inch short. Raining heavily all day. Next day passed exam. for U.S. Army.

Sat Aug 1st: all night farewell party for Joseph. Some time! all night racket. He was showered with presents.

Wed. Aug. 5th. Joe left this AM to be sworn in at 39 Whitehall St. Granted 24 hour pass . Sleeps at home to night for last time for Duration. Went to Boyle's for reception, - Joe. Dot, Frank, Ma, Mother, Mrs Kampf, her mother and I.

Thur. Aug 6th Joe left his AM - 7:15 for Penn Sta. This evening; 7 P.M. phoned from Camp Upton saying things were O.K. and he was living in Barracks B-3.

Mon. Aug 10th 7:30 PM. Joe phoned saying he just arrived in Miami, Fla. Assigned to Air Corps.

Tues Jan 12th 1943 Joseph returned this afternoon on furlough from Columbia Air Base, Columbia, S.C. He met Dot at her office & came home from there with Dot & Eileen. Went over to Kampf's this evening.

Wed 1/13th went to see former[?] friends at Royal Liverpool. Tonight went with Fran to see Felicity.

Friday, Jan 15th all night welcome-home party for Joe. All his old friends & Fran's & many of the older grown-ups were there. What a time! Everything on the Beam.

Sat & Sun. the 16th & 17th Joe & Dot gone to Auntie's in Wilton for Christening of Alfred's baby.

Wed. Jan 20th Mother, Dot, Joe, Fran, Gil, Eileen & I had a little get-together over at Boyle's. Stayed until around 1:30 A.M. Thurs. A.M.

Thurs Jan 21st Joe left at 9:00 A.M. on his return to Air Base.

Sat, March 6th Fran & I making an ice & snow chopper out of an old hoe down in the cellar. Later in P.M. shovelled snow and then flushed the car radiator that had been giving me trouble boiling over. In the evening started his & Dot's farewell party. And what a wow of a party! 1/2 & 1/4 bbs of B. Champaigne punch and eats. Had 49 guests. Gifts, gifts showered with them.

Sunday, March 7th Fran & I spent the day looking over the big camera seeing what we could do about fitting it up for use.

Monday March 8th. I'm so damn sick with severe attack of Bronchial cold, had to report sick. Home all week.

Tues. March 9th Fran bids all farewell and leaves for Army Camp at Upton, N.Y. It's just 8:30 A.M. All hands feel weary; weeping softly now as he treads his way up 87th St. and beyond.

Tues. March 16th: Well the usual farewell gathering at Boyle's for Dot took place to night. Mother, Eileen, Dot and I sat in and had our last beer fest. There was some show of home-talent; singing, dancing and horseplay by the habitues. We filed out and home around 2:30 AM.

Wed. March 17 1943; Took Dot to Dr. Sifter in the evening and after supper Charlie & Girt with Bobby came in to say good bye. Mother, Eileen and I went to the Penn stations to see Dot off. She left on midnight train after an hour or two getting organized. I believe 66 in all left on a troop train for Fort Ogalthrope, Ga. Home is so dull and lonesome now. Life holds so much now that appears to be nothing but a void.

Sunday, Aug. 1st 1943 Sitting all alone in dining room reading, all others in bed. Phone rings. Dot speaks from Penn Station - just arrived from Georgia. On furlough, met by Gil & Eileen. Says will be home about two or two thirty. AM.  Stopping in to have eats & few drinks. Waited up, went to Boyle's & after coming home at 2:30 A.M. decide to go up to subway Sta. 86th & 4th to meet her coming in. Sat there until around five A.M. when along comes Gil saying they had arrived at the house by taxi. All hands stayed up until long after day-light. I went to work half asleep. Wed. night Gen, Dot & I went over to see Aunt Maggie. Spent a very nice evening.

Sat night Aug. 7th threw a homecoming party for her. Had 1/2 & 1/4 & some time. Alfred & wife came with Dot from Wilton. Friends of Dot's from C.C. on hand Fel, Peggy & Moran kid were here, Jimmy Kirwan & his mate from N.Y. Navy yard were plastered. Frank Kane, John Terry & Johnny Meehan the Kampfs, Katz & Gert, Tommy & Kate, Cordie and a large crowd of the younger set. An all night affair and loud & dizzy for everyone.

Sunday Aug 8th Ma, Gen, Dot, Charlie & Gert went to Boyle's for a parting refresher. Chitter Carroll[?] sat in at a late hour and had quiet a chat with Dot.

Tues. eve. Eileen, Mother & I went to Penn. sta. with Dot. She boarded the 6:30 P.M. train for Oglethorpe Ga. again. God be with her and her brothers. May he he protect & keep them from all harm.
