Pelletier, Dot

Monday - 8/14/44

Dear Dot

Soooo I missed a swell chance at a gabfest with you on Sat. Just my luck - V is a pain - as Helen K said Betty could have gone up there by herself but you know V. Ron talked to Helen today and they're having a glorious[?] time, swimming, rowing, etc - only drawback is the out-door privy. There 2 days before Betty would use it and then only after they gave her a perfume soaked rag.

Haven't heard from Joe, but he said he wouldn't write - till he hit Miami - which he expected would be tonite or tomorrow. As his cab pulled away 2 St. Jo nuns came up street and seeing Chief on steps stopped to inquire of his son was going off to war. Pop explained he'd just returned from overseas and went into details - The gals thought that wonderful - one of them has a nephew in the Air Corps in Fla just about to receive his wings as a pilot - She remarked What's it all for? Probably communism[?] when this is all over - has a sister a nun [?] in the Visitation and they were on their way back to Brentwood - Gave Pop a standing invite to visit also took Joe's name - Fan's and yours and said they'd be entered in a book out there for a daily remembrance in Mass and prayers. Seemed like a coincidence when Joe's last word was a request for prayers he be sent north. Have a sneaky idea I already sent you this news - if I did please forgive "old age".

Fan wasn't in this weekend - had expected to pay Martha a visit at her Mothers place in Penn which evidentially is near where he's stationed at Hacketstown [Hackettstown]. Peggy called to know if I'd heard from him, she knew about the Penn trip but still thought I might have heard from him - Being in love is hell. I think I'll feel sorrier for Peg than I will for myself when Fan finally ships overseas.

Had a letter from Jimmy K. today. I'll send it on after I show it to Fan if he gets in this weekend. Do you get the Tablet still? If so you know Fr. Moran was buried last Friday. Phoned Dot [Sister Kathleen Dolores?] and she was shocked to hear it. Planned on coming to the Mass but had been out on Thursday for the first time so wasn't able to make it. Thought I'd see her. Have promised to go see her when she gets back from her vacation. Will take the 3 gals if they care to go.

Ron met Salerno last Fri nite and went to a movie in Bkyn - has another date for next Friday nite for another show with Mary & her sisters.

Ma came back Sunday AM from Gelston Ave but is leaving for Teaneck [tomorrow] as Ane is coming over for her.

This heat is sure wicked. Started painting kitchen on Sunday. All wood work finished and Chief has 1 coat on ceiling - but you know how slow he is. I'd like to have kitchen and bathroom finished before next Sat. Kezars are in Boston for a 2 week to a months stay.

Well Dot I'll close as I want to answer Kezar's card. Ron told you about plans for a shower for Gertie while you on furlough - maybe in 6 weeks you could make something. I had planned on it after the holidays but Gladys thought that too late so then I said we'd make it while Dot was in - which would bring Sherman and Salerno in on it. Will have to let Kate think it's Gladys' affair cause I didn't give Katty one. However sheets - cases - pillow and blanket cost 25, so I think Shieldses did their share. Will let you know what gives with Joe and Fan - Here's hoping I get in on the next phone call

Love from Mother
