Friday 21 July Dear Mom & Dad: This is really cheating - but they really kept us busy this week. Tues worked 8AM - 9:30 PM & Wed 8AM - 11PM. Yesterday was my PM off & I had to go to town fo a little last-minute shopping. Hoped to get my laundry out tonite but find we have to work - that makes another 10-12 hr day & I'm wondering when I'll get ready. But I still have Sat Eve. & Sun. morning. Am writing this between interviews & know I'm not going to get very far. Thank you for the $$. Was afraid you'd send a $ order & it would arrive too late to be cashed. By all means take it out of the bank. I'm getting tight. It pains me to know it's dwindling - but the trip is worth it. That will be wearing - but I'm about to have the screaming mimis if I don't get away from here. This job is slowly driving me crazy & you can now start praying for a transfer. This has nothing to do with my liking Army - rest assured - Simply 16 too many months of the same thing - plus some unpleasant office dealings that have sickened me. They're starting to use social workers for psychiatric interviewing with the medics - so I've asked for it! Which undoubtedly means that I'll be here another eternity. And if I got it - it might turn out to be the same half-assed job in some western desert hospital - my luck! - but even that would be a welcome change. Incidentally my furlough is Oct 1 - 12, I hope - or I can move it up to Sept 15 for only 10 days. I figure I may as well have the extra 2 days for the extra 2 wks waiting. What do you say? Besides, it would give more time for seeing Joe if he's still in the south-east. Or by then, maybe he could get home - oh yeah! But I sure won't be seeing our little Franny boy. It must be a month since I've written him & now won't get down to it for another week. No word from Touhey recently. She wrote me once - after I'd sent her a friendly reminder. I answered immediately but heard nothing since. Have sent a card, but no response in over a month. I won't fail to see her on furlough but I sure ain't writing again. May Hill wrote me a nice note several weeks ago, sending a dollar for a Tom Collins! What are they? In the berg I simply substituted beer. If you're talking to them sell them I've been busy & visiting but will write when I get back. Give my love to Ma. And how about watching her & reporting to me, 'cause I just don't think she's saying the right prayers. Maybe you could have her say them out loud at night. She doesn't have to mention me first, or be too insistent but make sure she slips my name in there someplace. I shall have to step on my tongue to keep from badgering Joe with questions. But you may be sure I'll relay any plans or info I get to you. Sat Morn Well, I've written the past few pages this morning, Saturday. Worked till 9:30 last PM then washed my hair & so to bed. Am absolutely worn out - will have to close. More next week. Love & many thanks. Dot.
