Pelletier, Dot
Gen & Chief

Thursday, 22 Jun 44 (is it possible - half the year gone!)

Dear Mother & Dad:

Just a few minutes before we go home for noon mess so I shan't get far with this. Besides, want to see if there's any mail to answer along with this. Haven't had any from 244 since the $ arrived.

Speaking of $:  guess this is my best bet: I owe mother upward of $100 - $150, maybe more - almost all since I came in the Army - so am enclosing $100 to wipe out part of the debt. I was to do it $25 - $30 monthly & I've missed this month already. So I may as well start someplace. What happens to the $100 is up to you - you can pay off some of your own bills that you missed because of paying mine - or  you can put it into clothes, etc, for yourself & Chief - after all, at this point it's practically "found" money. And I shall send the $25 - $30 monthly to get further caught up. The extra $50 I shall hold for a few weeks pending a few more thoughts. Do want to buy some "civvy" shoes - my first in 16 months but hate to use this dough for 'em - 8-13 $$$. But I can never get that much out of my pay so perhaps I will now. So far have purchased 2 brassieres - period.

Fri - your mail here today but I'm so hot won't try to do it justice now. It's 98 here every day - today 100 - gets so hot in the office you honestly can't think & could almost cry. So we're experimenting with these hours

8AM - 11:30 or noon

7PM - 10 PM - it's usually noon & 10:30 PM when the chief interviewers get out. That gives us the afternoons to bake in, but at least you can do it in a bathing suit or fatigues & not care how you look. Besides you don't have to contend with these damn recruits who want the moon & the platter, when you're all hot & tortured.

Of course I'm starting to break out from heat & greasy foods but there's no remedy. So hot you can't eat much so fill up with gas & cold coke, juices, ice water - all a lovely mess which leaves your stomach jittery at all times.

Now 4 PM & want to get the money order & collect the mail before mess. Then have some Friday nite detailing & my shower to attend to before going to work.

So hope you'll forgive this mess. Will write at length over the week-end. Also have to talk to Joe & Fan again.

Helen's partially right - more later!

Please do get a beer & dinner for you 2 out of this! Am hoping you plan something interesting with it - although I know the bill situation.

Love, Dot.

Don't miss Going My Way with Bing Crosby. Even dad will love it. Story of young curate who goes into parish of an old Irishman (45 yrs pastor) to clear debts. "Old man" reminds me of grandpop!

It's a riot and a tear-jerker.
